Leading Through Compassion Fatigue
As the year winds down, many clergy find themselves exhausted—not only physically but emotionally and spiritually. The constant call to hold others’ pain can leave even seasoned leaders depleted. This is compassion fatigue, and it is real.
Emotional numbness or irritability
Withdrawal from relationships
Difficulty finding joy or motivation
A sense of spiritual dryness or disconnection
Ignoring these signs doesn’t make them disappear; it only deepens the weariness.
Name your fatigue without shame. Acknowledge your limits as part of your humanity, not a failure of faith.
Engage body-based restoration. Rest, walk, stretch, breathe—let your body help your spirit heal.
Re-connect with meaning. Recall moments this year when you witnessed grace. Allow gratitude to re-ignite purpose.
Seek support. Reach out to peers, mentors, therapists, or spiritual directors—especially those who understand the particular weight of ministry.
You cannot pour from an empty vessel. The One who called you also cares for you. Rest is holy. Restoration is part of your call.
As you tend others, let yourself be tended by God.
