Formed by What We Scroll: Technology and the Shaping

of the Soul

We often think of technology as a tool.

Something neutral. Something we use.

But over time, most of us begin to suspect that the relationship is not quite that simple.

Because what we give our attention to… also forms us.

Every scroll shapes perception.
Every notification interrupts or redirects our focus.
Every algorithm learns what holds us—and gives us more of it.

And slowly, almost imperceptibly, our inner world begins to mirror the patterns of our digital one.

Fragmented. Reactive. Urgent.

This is not a moral failure. It is formation.

Technology is not just something we use—it is an environment we inhabit. And like any environment, it carries values, rhythms, and assumptions that shape us over time.

Speed over slowness.
Reaction over reflection.
Volume over depth.

And so the question is not simply whether technology is good or bad.

The question is: What is it doing to us?

What kind of people are we becoming in its presence?

Because spiritual formation is always happening. The only question is whether we are participating in it intentionally—or being shaped without awareness.

This is why the invitation is not withdrawal, but attentiveness.

To begin noticing:

Noticing creates space for choice.

And from that space, we can begin to practice something different.

We can create small boundaries that protect our attention.
We can build rhythms that return us to our bodies and to God.
We can choose depth over distraction, even if only for a few moments at a time.

This might look like:

Not as rigid rules—but as gentle reorientation.

Because the goal is not to reject technology.

It is to refuse to be unconsciously shaped by it.

We are always being formed.

The question is whether our formation is leading us toward greater presence, compassion, and wisdom—or pulling us further into distraction and disconnection.

So pay attention to what you are scrolling.

Not with judgment.

But with curiosity.

Because what forms your attention… forms your life.
